How to Copy Paste Large Files to a Flash drive

A flash drive is a storage option. This device offers various storage capacities. With a large capacity, it  can accommodate large files as well.

Too large for the destination file system

However, when transferring files to a flash drive with a large size, a notification appears that the file has a size larger than the capacity.

too large for the destination file system

The above sentence is the message that appears when you cannot transfer a large file. This can happen because a single file has a size of 4GB or more. Based on this notification, the flash drive capacity may be insufficient. However, in reality, when checking the available capacity, the capacity is still large, and it is possible to store the file. Or you can even think that the flash drive you are using is damaged.

However, this error can occur because of the file system on the flash drive. When formatting a flash drive, there is a choice of what file system to choose. A flash drive can have multiple file system options. If the file transfer fails with the error message the file is “too large for the destination file system”, then the cause can be because the file system used is FAT32. To fix this, it is necessary to change the file system.

How to change the file system format

  1. Right-click on the drive to be formatted to change the file system
  2. When the formatting window opens, select the file system with the NTFS option
  3. Click format and wait for the process to finish
  4. After the formatting process is complete, please restart the file transfer.

The steps above are alternatives to file transfer problems. File transfer failure with the error message the file is “too large for the destination file system” can occur due to insufficient storage capacity or due to the file system format. Make sure to check the problem first.
